AI fever dreams, CGI reality distortions, NFT tides going in and out: HOLO’s news ticker is a sprawling history of how art, science, technology, and culture intersect. In 2023, we invited media artist Marcel Schwittlick to distill this record into a more expressive form. Parsing the metadata of an entire year, Schwittlick translated key details—artist names, technologies, cultural organizations—into vibrant matrixes of vintage plotter code. Mixing generative art, data visualization, and media archaeology is on brand for the trained computer scientist, who is renowned for engineering tantalizing geometries with storied drawing machines. A connoisseur (and collector) of plotters from the 1970s and 1980s, Schwittlick surrounds himself with rare and obsolete reproduction technologies to explore their idiosyncrasies.
