Coumba Samba’s “deutschland” puts logistics and supply chains under the microscope at Kunstverein in Hamburg. Fittingly staged in Germany’s major shipping hub, the American artist fills the darkened gallery with colourful shipping container-like structures and strobing lights, simultaneously localizing maritime flows of goods and capital and evoking a nocturnal port. Visitors navigate “a disorienting intimate experience of globalization’s distorting abstraction,” writes curator Milan Ther.

Meredith Whittaker Rebukes Generative AI “Derivatives of Mass Surveillance” https://www.holo.mg/stream/meredith-whitaker-2024-helmut-schdmidt-future-prize-acceptance-speech/ Wed, 15 May 2024 14:31:36 +0000 https://www.holo.mg/?p=64267
“The current AI craze is a result of a toxic surveillance business model. It is not the result of novel scientific approaches that, like the printing press, fundamentally shifted a paradigm.”
– Signal Foundation president Meredith Whittaker, describing AI products as an intensification of surveillance capitalism. Accepting the 2024 Helmut Schmidt Future Prize in Hamburg, Whittaker warns that generative AI “must be understood, primarily, as a way of marketing the derivatives of mass surveillance.”

Jakob Kudsk Steensen Celebrates Iconic 18th-Century Landscapes With Computer Simulation https://www.holo.mg/stream/jakob-kudsk-steensen-the-ephemeral-lake-hamburger-kunsthalle/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.holo.mg/?p=63052

Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s installation, The Ephemeral Lake (2024), premieres at Hamburger Kunsthalle, reinterpreting the landscapes of 18th century Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich as immersive, computer-simulated ecologies. The piece explores themes of water, deep time, and crystallization, Steensen says, and “goes beyond contrasting the human figure in the environment.” Instead, it invites a worldview “where our bodies and minds merge with environmental energies and other species.”

“Copyright only works above a certain threshold of importance. That’s something you learn as an artist. Your voice doesn’t matter.”
– Artist and experimental filmmaker Robert Seidel, on how little leverage artists have against data-hungry AI companies compared to major institutions like The New York Times, which sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement the day before Seidel’s talk at the 37th Chaos Communication Congress (37c3)

“Your own sense of reality becomes increasingly specific to you and your synthetic friends, but this isn’t happening on a neutral plane. Your friends work for giant corporations and are designed to extract as much value from you as possible.”
– American artist Trevor Paglen, at the 37th Chaos Communication Congress (37C3), illustrating a dystopian near-future of corporate AI companionship, where “emotional manipulation will be the name of the game”

Now, a major retrospective sees Kunstverein and 12 German museums mounting exhibitions reviewing the artist’s work “with the hindsight of artistic and technological developments of the past twenty years.”
