Historian Reminds Us of “Archive of the Space Race” Orbiting Overhead

“There’s an archive of the space race, still circling the Earth. There’s so much stuff that was launched in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s. Sometimes we’re reminded that there’s this museum there because it drops on our heads.”
– Historian Asif Siddiqi, on the descent of Kosmos-482, a 1970s Soviet probe that splashed down in the Indian Ocean west of Jakarta (ID). Launched to land on Venus, it never achieved escape velocity and orbited Earth for 53 years.
