Report Analyzes Growing Energy Footprint of Data Centres
The International Energy Agency (IEA) publishes “Energy and AI,” investigating the growing electricity footprint of computing infrastructure. The authors project the 1.5% of global electricity consumption (415 TWh in 2024) currently used by data centres will more than double to 945 TWh by 2030. Key findings: AI applications could optimize energy systems, saving 4.5 exajoules by 2035; and 20% of planned data centres face delays due to grid constraints and component shortages.
